The Jatropha cathartica is a beautiful caudex plant. In nature, this Jatropha occurs in Central America, Texas and Mexico. Here this plant grows in dry areas in clay soil.

The Jatropha cathartica produces a beautiful round light brown caudex. This is the tuber from which its leaves grow. Its caudex uses the Jatropha cathartica to store large amounts of water. This allows you to survive a period of drought for a long time.

From its caudex the Jatropha cathartica forms small fresh green stems with leaves. This plant blooms regularly in spring and summer. Orange flowers then grow between the upper leaves. The Jatropha cathartica has a rest period. She loses a lot of her leaves here. Usually this is in winter. Give it a little less water until you see it start to sprout again. When this plant is kept warm it may also remain in leaves all year round.
