Information

The Melocactus Conoideus is a beautiful green colored ball cactus. In nature, the Melocactus Conoideus occurs in the Brazilian state of Vitoria da Conquista. Here this Melocactus grows in dry forest areas between rocks and low-growing plants. The Melocactus Conoideus grows in gravelly soil. Due to the mining and excavation of this soil for tennis courts, the Melocactus Conoideus is unfortunately almost extinct in the wild. Fortunately, it is cultivated in culture. This ensures the survival of this beautiful Melocactus.

The Melocactus Conoideus has short thick reddish brown thorns. The plant body of the Melocactus Conoideus is dark green in color. This cactus grows to a height of 10 cm and reaches a diameter of 17 cm. As with the other Melocactus species, Melocactus Conoideus produces a cephalium. A cephalium is the part of a Melocactus from which it will flower. This is often colored red to purple, consists mainly of woolly areoles and has small orange to red spines. In summer, a ring of pink-purple flowers appear from the cephalium on top of the Melocactus. The flowers are usually around 2 cm in size and open in the afternoon.

When the Melocactus Conoideus forms a cephalium, the lower cactus part no longer grows. The cephalium continues to grow. This becomes a bit bigger and wider every year. Because the cephalium of the Melocactus increases, the number of flowers that this cactus produces also increases.
