The Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea is a beautiful and unique cactus species. The Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea occurs naturally in rocky and sandy areas in the Mojave Desert and in the north of the Great Basins desert.

The Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea is a small variant of the Opuntia polycantha. This cactus grows into small bushes of about 35 cm high. The leaves of these cacti are thick and fleshy and have the characteristic Opuntia leaf shape, but sometimes also a somewhat elongated shape. The color of the leaves of this cactus is green. The spines have a light color to sometimes even reddish brown on top of the cactus. The intensity of the color of the spines depends on the amount of sunlight. The spines can grow up to 8 cm long. Because the spines of the Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea are so thin, it looks as if this cactus has a large haircut. Some spines can still prick you. So this cactus is not entirely cuddly.

The Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea produces new leaves on top of the older leaves. This way, new leaves grow every year. The young leaves often still have small spines in the first year. The long spines usually appear in later years.

The Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea is winter hardy and can withstand frost well. It is important that the cacti are dry or protected from rainfall. This cactus cannot withstand frost in combination with the wet soil it is in.

When the Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea overwinters in the cold, it will flower quite easily at the end of spring. Her flowers grow on the upper leaves. These are 5-6 cm in size and have a beautiful purple-pink color.

When this cactus overwinters in completely dry soil, the Opuntia polyacantha var Erinacea can tolerate temperatures down to -12 °C.
