Information
Hoodia Gordonii is a beautiful succulent plant that can thrive in harsh conditions. In the wild, Hoodia Gordonii grows in a large area of the Kalahari Desert in Namibia and South Africa. Two small populations are also known to grow in desert areas in Botswana and Angola.
Hoodia Gordonii grows into small shrubs of 50 to 70 cm. From the base, this Hoodia branches out, sometimes with as many as 50 lateral branches. The stems of this Hoodia are green, and the ribs are bumpy. This provides extra protection from the sun. Hoodia Gordonii can withstand extremely hot temperatures of up to 50°C. The spines are light brown and about 1 cm long.
Hoodia Gordonii begins blooming in October. Extreme summer heat can promote flowering in this Hoodia. The flowers are round and reddish-brown. In older Hoodia Gordonii plants, the flowers can reach a diameter of 9 cm. The flowers of this Hoodia are pollinated by flies, which is why they have a mild odor. The flowers are classified as carrion flowers, similar to Huernia and Orbea varieties.
The Hoodia is not only a very beautiful and characteristic plant. Hoodia Gordonii is also known for its appetite-suppressing properties. It's sometimes called the miracle plant of the twentieth century because it's found in many diet pills, powders, and other products.
The original inhabitants of the Kalahari Desert ate Hoodia Gordonii when they were on long treks searching for food. Besides satisfying hunger, Hoodia Gordonii also enhances your senses and endurance. This is especially helpful when finding food and hunting prey.
Note: Do you see a dark layer on your plant? Don't panic! It's dried plant sap. Sometimes plants get small scratches or wounds during transport, and then the plant creates a kind of "plant bandage." This is completely normal and not harmful. You can carefully remove it with a little water and a brush – or just leave it alone. The plant won't be bothered by it.
