Information

Monadenium magnificum, now often referred to as Euphorbia magnifica, is an impressive, rare succulent shrub from Tanzania. This species is prized by collectors for its unique cactus-like appearance, beautiful leaves, and striking inflorescence.

Origin and habitat: This plant is native to Tanzania, where it grows on red soils in dry deciduous forests and Commiphora scrub, often at the foot of hills. Natural populations are small, often consisting of only a few dozen plants per location.

Description: Euphorbia magnifica is a sparsely branched shrub that can grow to between 1.5 and 2 meters tall. From a thickened caudex less than 10 cm wide, grayish-green, angular stems emerge, each bearing 4 to 5 ribs. The stems are furnished with star-shaped, brownish-red to purple-green spines scattered along the ribs.

Leaves: The large, oval leaves are dark green with a glossy texture and light veins. Older leaves often develop a purplish-red tinge. They appear during the growing season but are short-lived and fall off as soon as flowering begins.

Flowers: The blooms are spectacular and one of the highlights of this species. Small, dark pink flowers are borne in bright red bracts, arranged on square, red-colored stems that also bear spines.

Flowering period: Flowering takes place in late autumn to spring (November – April).

Care: This plant requires a growing method that closely resembles its natural environment. Poor, well-drained soil, full sun or light shade, and sparing watering during the growing season will encourage compact and healthy growth. During the dormant period, watering should be kept to a minimum.

Disclaimer: The leaves of this unique plant easily detach during transport. We try to package them as carefully as possible, but unfortunately, we cannot prevent one or a few leaves from detaching. Please take this into consideration when purchasing.
