Information

Pachycereus Pringlei is a beautiful column cactus with an impressive spine. In nature, this giant dominates the deserts of Baja, California and the coastal area of the state of Sonora in Mexico. This column cactus can grow really old. The oldest specimens in the wild are estimated to be 200 years old. The height that this cactus reaches in nature is 18 to 20 m.

The Pachycereus Pringlei often branches from the underside of the main stem. As a result, this cactus often develops long, straight vertical arms as it ages. In Mexico this cactus has been given the nickname Mexican giant cardon or elephant cactus. This column cactus owes its nickname cardón to the Spaniards. She named the Pachycereus Pringlei "Cardo" which means thistle in Spanish.

The fruit of this cactus was an important food for the Seri people of Sonora, who call the cactus xaasj. A symbiotic relationship with bacterial and fungal colonies at the roots allows the Pachycereus pringlei to grow on bare rocks even when no soil is available at all. Because the bacteria can fix nitrogen from the air and break down the rock to produce nutrients.
