Information

These plants are already quite large. They don't grow on their own roots, but on a grafted stem of Ferocactus glaucescens.

The Puna bonnieae f. inermis is a unique dwarf cactus that is not often encountered. This cactus does not occur in nature but was developed through cultivation. In nature, the Puna bonnieae grows in harsh conditions at altitudes of up to 2,000 meters among rocky ground. The sun is intense here, and there is little rainfall. The Puna bonnieae has adapted well to these conditions. It has a thick taproot that allows it to store a lot of water, allowing it to survive long periods without rain. This cactus also withdraws almost completely into the ground during dry periods. This keeps the cactus slightly cooler and reduces the surface area exposed to the sun. This latter characteristic reduces moisture evaporation from the cactus. These characteristics are also present in the Puna bonnieae f. inermis. The only difference with this variety is that this cactus has almost no spines. The Puna bonnieae is a slow grower. This cactus produces many small, round balls. Ultimately, the Puna bonnieae grows into a small cluster of 12-15 cm in diameter.

When the Puna bonnieae f. inermis is happy, it can start blooming. The blooms of the Puna bonnieae f. inermis are truly beautiful. Larger, 5-6 cm pinkish-white flowers emerge from the small bulbs of this cactus. On the last day of blooming, the flowers often turn pale yellow. The Puna bonnieae can start blooming when it's happy with you. If your plant hasn't bloomed for years, it might help to overwinter it in a cool, light spot, place it in a sunny spot in the spring, and water it for the first time with ice-cold water. In nature, the first water they receive in the spring is often cold due to meltwater from the mountains.
