The Schlumbergera is a beautiful Christmas cactus that occurs naturally in Brazil. Here it grows as an epiphyte on other trees and plants. This Christmas cactus occurs in Brazil in a small mountainous area in the Brazilian coastal regions near São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

These Schlumbergeras do not originate from Brazil. They have been bred for flower colour. This has resulted in the most beautiful hybrids being selected and further cultivated. The flowering period is usually from October to April. They often flower multiple times during this period. The flower buds appear in large numbers on top of the leaves. Because these Schlumbergera member cacti often also flower at Christmas or Easter, they are also called the Christmas cactus or Easter cactus.
