Information
The Selenicereus atropilosus is an impressive epiphytic cactus native to Central and South America. With its long, winding stems and large, fragrant night blooms, it is one of the most unique species in the cactus family. This species is often prized in collections for its striking appearance and unusual growth habit.
The Selenicereus atropilosus grows in diverse habitats, from dry forests to tropical rainforests. It is native from Mexico to northern Brazil. In the wild, the plant climbs trees and other shrubs, attaching itself with aerial roots.
This cactus forms long, slender stems that can reach up to 6 meters in the wild. The segments are covered with small black spines (atropilose hairs), giving the species its name. The stems are green and clearly jointed, giving the plant a graceful, sometimes somewhat irregular, appearance.
The night-blooming flowers are a spectacular highlight. They reach a diameter of up to 20 cm, are white to cream in color, and are strongly scented. The flowers open in the evening and often fade by the next morning. After flowering, the plant can produce edible fruit.
Selenicereus atropilosus is a hardy, adaptable species that tolerates both drought and low light conditions. In pots, it thrives in airy, well-drained soil, regular watering during the growing season, and a location with sufficient space and support. This cactus thrives as a hanging or climbing plant and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation in warm climates.
