Information
The Sinningia leucotricha is a special succulent that occurs naturally in Brazil, South America. Here, this plant grows as a lithophyte, often in crevices on rocks or cliffs among ferns and other succulent species such as Lepismium cruciforme, which are normally epiphytes but can also grow on steep slopes. In nature, the flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds. Nowadays, this succulent plant is classified under the name Sinningia canescens.
The Sinningia leucotricha is a tuberous herbaceous perennial with silvery-white hairy leaves and large, powerfully fragrant tubular red-orange flowers. The plant grows upright to about 30 cm tall and 35 cm wide. This species is one of several South American gesneriads that straddle the line between succulents, caudiciforms, or aquatic plants with large fleshy tubers and is often cultivated by cactus and succulent enthusiasts as a caudiciform.
The tuber is flattened spherical with a sunken top and grows 6 to 10 cm or more in diameter with light brown bark. The tuber is fleshy but firm and partially visible above the ground. This is a storage organ that allows the plant to survive periods of drought, cold, or other unfavorable growing conditions. The leaves are in whorls of 4 to 6, are ovoid and up to 15 cm long and 10 cm wide, silvery white and densely covered with silky hairs.
The Sinningia leucotricha blooms in spring to early summer with bright salmon-red flowers in clusters of 3 to 5 in leaf axils or at the ends of stems. The flowers hang downwards and are short-lived.
