Information

The Pachypodium Lamerei occurs naturally in southern Madagascar. Here it can grow into large trees of up to 6 meters high. This succulent has therefore been nicknamed the Madagascar palm. Here in the Netherlands, the conditions are different than in Madagascar and it will take this Pachypodium decades to reach this height.

When the Pachypodium Lamerei grows taller, that spiky stem of the plant also thickens. The Pachypodium stores its water in the trunk. Pachypodium means thick-footed in Latin. Green leaves grow from the head of the plant. These remain on the plant for several months before they shrivel and fall off. Don't worry if the lower leaves suddenly shrivel. This is normal and often this Pachypodium has already formed enough new fresh leaves that it is not even noticeable that it is missing a few.

Some older plants that are between 80 and 100 cm tall can start to flower. These Pachypodiums do this in the Netherlands when there is a longer warm period in the summer and the plant is growing well. The flowers of the Pachypodium Lamerei are yellow in color and appear at the head of the plant between the leaves.
