This is a beautiful succulent plant with all kinds of small leaves and can grow into a large shrub of 2.5 to 5 meters high. This succulent does not lose its leaves. The leaves are fleshy, bright green and egg-shaped. When the plant gets older, the leaves turn yellowish. It is found in the Karoo and the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. The locals also call this succulent plant spekboom or elephantkos (elephant food). Elephants like the top leaves best and can eat up to 200 kg of them per day. Not only elephants eat the leaves of this succulent plant. The leaves are often used in salads in local restaurants. They have a fresh lemon flavor.
