Astrophytum Myriostigma is a spineless cactus covered in tiny white dots. Its appearance has earned it the nickname "Bishop's Hat." Astrophytum Myriostigma is native to the highlands of central and northern Mexico, where it grows on hillsides and in steppe regions. When young, this cactus remains difficult to find in the wild, hiding beneath vegetation or dead grasses. As it matures, Astrophytum Myriostigma grows taller. This cactus can reach considerable sizes later in life and changes its growth habit accordingly. Initially, Astrophytum Myriostigma grows as a ball cactus. Later, it grows taller, reaching a diameter of 12 to 15 cm as a ball cactus. At that point, Astrophytum Myriostigma can grow to a height of up to 150 cm with a diameter of 15-20 cm. However, this will take several decades, because it is not a fast grower.

On warm summer days, the Astrophytum Myriostigma produces bright yellow flowers that emerge from the cactus's head. The flowers are delightfully fragrant and can reach a diameter of up to 7 cm.

Normally, these plants have five ribs. Occasionally, an Astrophytum Myriostigma with four ribs would grow from seeds. Plants with four ribs were further bred, resulting in a stable species, Astrophytum Myriostigma Quadricostatum. The same applies to the spots. The nudum variety emerged from breeding plants with few to no spots.
