The Coryphantha compacta is a beautiful cactus species found in the wild in northwestern Mexico. Here, this Coryphantha compacta grows on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental in the states of Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, and Durango. The plant is very common here and grows in various habitats, from grasslands on sandy plains to volcanic soils on dry hills and pine forests in the mountains. Due to its wide distribution, this species is quite variable in appearance.

The Coryphantha compacta is a small cactus that usually grows solitarily. The plant has beautiful spines consisting of radial spines that grow all around. What is special about this cactus is that some plants only have radial spines, while others also develop central spines. The central spines are sturdy and sharp with a hook that bends downwards like cat claws. They are yellowish in color with mostly dark brown tips and reddish-brown in color when the cacti are still young.

The Coryphantha compacta not only has a beautiful appearance but can also bloom magnificently. The flowering period is in spring and summer. Bright yellow flowers grow from the top of the cactus, forming a beautiful contrast with the plant's spines.

When this cactus is overwintered completely dry, the Coryphantha compacta can withstand temperatures down to -12 degrees Celsius.
