Information

The Cumulopuntia zehnderi is a unique cactus native to the rocky, dry regions of Arequipa, Peru, South America. In its natural habitat, this species grows well hidden among rocks and gravel, making it rarely seen in the wild.

The plant forms compact clumps by producing new shoots from the base. The stems are bright green and covered with distinct tubercles, surmounted by white, woolly areoles from which emerge fine white radial spines and longer yellowish to brownish central spines. This contrast gives the cactus a striking and distinctive appearance.

In spring, Cumulopuntia zehnderi blooms with large, white-yellow flowers that emerge from the plant's buds, a spectacular sight in mature specimens. A cool winter is important for profuse flowering. In early spring, giving the first watering with ice-cold water can help stimulate flowering, as this mimics the melting of snow in nature.

This species thrives in plenty of sun, well-drained soil, and requires little water, especially in winter. A rare cactus with a rugged character and a beautiful, natural look.
