Information

The Euphorbia handiensis is a very special and rare species found exclusively in the Parque Natural de Jandía nature reserve on Fuerteventura. In its natural habitat, this plant grows in dry, volcanic valleys among basalt rocks, where extreme heat, wind, and minimal rainfall are the norm. Thanks to these conditions, the Euphorbia handiensis has developed into an exceptionally hardy and unique specimen.

This species forms compact, columnar stems 6 to 8 cm in diameter and can grow into a small shrub of about 1 meter tall. The young parts of the plant are bright to light green, while older segments turn gray. Along the ribs are characteristic white spines, about 3 cm long, which are connected at the base. In the wild, both short-spined and nearly spineless forms occur, giving the species a variable appearance.

During the flowering period, small, amber to yellow-green cyathia appear, which are pollinated by green flies.
