The Hylocereus undatus is a beautiful cactus that occurs naturally in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. This cactus often grows here as a climbing shrub in tropical deciduous forests and riparian vegetation.

The stems of this cactus are triangular, light green to bright green, with three ribs and wavy edges and can grow up to 10 meters long. The areoles are white and woolly and bear spines. The 1-3 conical spines are up to 1 cm long. This cactus has a meandering growth habit and usually climbs up trees and rocks thanks to its aerial roots. These special roots enable the plant to absorb moisture from the air and nutrients from small soil particles. Plants that can grow on trees are called epiphytes, and plants that grow on rocks are called lithophytes. Hylocereus undatus has both properties!

When the Hylocereus undatus is happy with you, it will flower at the beginning of the summer. The flowers grow from the sides of the stems and have a bright white color. They grow large and produce a strong sweet smell. The flowers of this cactus open at night and also only bloom for 1 night. When the flowers are pollinated, fruits develop. These are the well-known dragon fruit fruits. The fruits are elongated, fleshy, edible and red in color with white flesh.
