General information Lophophora Williamsii / Peyote Cactus

The Lophophora Williamsii is a spineless cactus with a large underground root. The Lophophora Williamsii is native to South Texas and Northern Mexico. This cactus is eaten by indigenous peoples during rituals and celebrations. The indigenous peoples eat this cactus for its hallucinogenic effect. The nickname given to the Lophophora Williamsii and under which you often encounter it is Peyote cactus.

In spring and throughout the summer, small pink flowers appear from the head of this cactus. The pink of the flowers alternates with light white stripes. When these have been pollinated, small pink berries with seeds appear from the head of the Lophophora Williamsii.

The Lophophora Williamsii can withstand long periods of drought. The taproot size, which is often larger than the cactus itself, can store a lot of water. The Lophophora Williamsii can continue with this for a long time. If this cactus does not get water for a long time, it shrinks and retreats into the ground.

The Lophophora Williamsii likes a mineral soil. This means that little potting soil/humus has been added and many materials such as stones, sand, grit or gravel. By placing the Lophophora Williamsii in a mineral-rich soil mixture, this cactus develops a much healthier root system. The Lophophora Williamsii cacti that you buy from us are of course already standard in this soil mixture.
