The Opuntia Vulgaris is a beautiful Opuntia species that occurs naturally in a large area in Mexico. Here the Opuntia Vulgaris grows in dry areas with lots of sun.

The Opuntia Vulgaris produces oval-shaped leaves that grow elongated upwards. Occasionally a long central thorn grows from an areole. The leaves do have many hair-thin small spines that detach when touched. Even though this cactus looks cuddly, don't do it.

The Opuntia Vulgaris can grow into a large shrub of 2-3 meters high. The Opuntia Vulgaris takes many years to do this. The Opuntia Vulgaris is not winter hardy, but it does enjoy being outside from mid-May to October. This promotes its growth, but also flowering. If the Opuntia Vulgaris is happy with you, it will bloom in the summer. Its beautiful yellow flowers grow on top of many discs. These spread a slightly sweet scent and can grow up to 7 cm in size. When the flowers are pollinated, fruits grow from them. Also called prickly pear. These have a sweet taste and are edible.
