The Sauromatum venosum, also known as the Voodoo lily, is a fascinating tuberous plant that originates from the forests of India and the Himalayas. It was discovered in 1774 and found its way to Europe in 1815. The plant is best known for its spectacular inflorescence: an elongated, dark green spadix with a tubular sheath of about 30 cm long. The inside is yellow with purple spots, while the outside has a deep purple hue.

In the spring, the tuber is planted in a sheltered spot in partial shade, preferably in well-drained soil. It also thrives in a large pot with potting soil and a little sand. Care is simple: give only a little water after planting and repeat this once a month when the flower bud becomes visible. After flowering, the decorative, fresh green leaves appear. As long as these leaves are visible, water once every 2 weeks. Do not water the tubers in pots after the summer. The leaves die off and the tuber goes dormant.

Although the tuber is not completely winter hardy, it can overwinter in the open ground after a few years. In a pot it can go outside in the summer, but in the winter it needs a cool, dry place. A unique plant that with its exotic appearance and special growth habit is a real asset to the garden or terrace.
