Information

The Senecio scaposus var. caulescens is a special succulent that you do not often encounter. In nature this Senecio occurs in a relatively small area along the Swartkops River in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Here it often grows between rocks in a dry area.

The Senecio scaposus var. caulescens makes many fleshy elongated leaves. These leaves can store a lot of moisture to survive a long period of drought. The leaves are covered with a gray-white layer. This layer protects the plant from the intense sun that is in nature. the end of its leaves have the shape of a spoon or spatula. The gray-white skin can come loose at the lower leaves. This is often a sign that the leaf is dying, because it is old and is being replaced by new ones at the top of the plant.

The Senecio scaposus var. caulescens is not an easy bloomer. It rarely does this and often only after many years. The flowers appear at the end of the summer. From the heart of this succulent plant then grows a small flower stem with many small bright yellow flowers.
