Information

The Stephania erecta is a beautiful tropical caudex plant native to Thailand and Australia. Caudex means tuberous, and the plant grows from a thickened tuber that stores water and nutrients. This type of plant is primarily found in warm regions where it often grows under a dense canopy and receives little water. In its natural habitat, the Stephania erecta grows as a vining climber up trees. The plant thrives in high humidity.

The Stephania erecta has a striking tuber that can be located either above or below the ground. From this tuber, tendrils with beautiful round green leaves emerge. With this species, you always see the tendrils with leaves sprouting first, and only then do they form roots. They do not develop an extensive root system, as you would expect with cacti and succulents. This means they can be loose in the pot or, in some cases, you can even remove them.

What is special about the Stephania erecta is its natural growth cycle. Like other caudex plants such as Caladium, Oxalis, and even the potato, this plant follows a seasonal pattern. While most houseplants remain visible all year round, it works differently with the Stephania erecta. In winter, the plant goes dormant, loses its leaves, and does not grow. In spring and summer, new tendrils and leaves appear; this is its growth period. This natural cycle makes the Stephania erecta extra special; you see it reawaken every year and the tuber grow larger.

The plants we are currently offering are in their growth period. If you feel that the roots are not yet fully developed, you can place the plant in a warm spot, keep the soil lightly moist, and mist the tuber twice a week. You can also mist the leaves.
