Information

The Astrophytum asterias, also known as the Sand Dollar Cactus or Sea-urchin Cactus, is one of the most beloved cactus species among collectors. This unique cactus is native to the border region of Texas and Northern Mexico, where it grows in dry, sandy areas among rocks and shrubs. In the wild, it is almost flush with the ground, making it barely noticeable in its natural environment.

The Astrophytum asterias is a compact, flattened cactus without spines, but with small white dots of fine hairs all over its surface. These give the plant a recognizable spotted pattern that resembles that of a sand dollar, which is where it gets its nickname. The cactus grows slowly and stays low to the ground with 8 broad ribs and round areoles.

In the spring, the Astrophytum asterias produces beautiful yellow flowers with an orange-red center, which are often larger than the plant itself. The flowers open during the day and bloom for only one to two days, but can appear several times a year with sufficient warmth and light.
