Astrophytum myriostigma is a spineless cactus covered in tiny white speckles. Because of its appearance, this plant is nicknamed the Bishop’s Cap. Astrophytum myriostigma is native to the highlands of central and northern Mexico, where it grows on hilly plains and in steppe areas. When young, this cactus can be difficult to spot in the wild. It hides among other vegetation or beneath dried grasses. As it gets older, Astrophytum myriostigma grows above its surroundings. This cactus can reach a considerable size as it matures, and its growth habit also changes. At first, Astrophytum myriostigma grows as a spherical cactus. Later, it grows upwards once its diameter as a ball-shaped cactus reaches 12 to 15 cm. It can then grow to as much as 150 cm tall and 15–20 cm in diameter. However, this takes several decades, as it is a slow grower.

On warm summer days, Astrophytum myriostigma produces bright yellow flowers that emerge from the top of the cactus. The flowers have a wonderful fragrance and can reach a diameter of up to 7 cm.

These plants normally have five ribs. Occasionally, seeds produce an Astrophytum myriostigma with four ribs. Growers began cultivating plants with four ribs, eventually developing a stable variety: Astrophytum myriostigma Quadricostatum.
