The Cumulopuntia rossiana is a beautiful small cactus species that occurs naturally in the south of Bolivia and the north of Argentina. Here this Cumulopuntia grows high in the mountains on dry, hot plains.

The Cumulopuntia rossiana has a dark green color and produces round to oval cylindrical leaves. Several tubercles are present on the leaves, with one or a few thick white to light brown spines growing mainly from the upper ones. The Cumulopuntia rossiana often produces new leaves on top of an existing leaf. This cactus forms small turf.

The Cumulopuntia rossiana is not an easy bloomer. It can help by allowing it to hibernate cold and watering it in early spring on sunny days. But when this cactus blooms, large bright orange flowers often appear on the upper leaves.
