Information

The Lophocereus schottii is a unique cactus that is not often encountered. In the wild, this Lophocereus grows in the desert regions of Mexico, primarily in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Sonora. Small populations also grow in the far south of Arizona. There, it grows in colonies in favorable locations such as dunes, riverbanks, rocky slopes, and on thin, dry, gravelly soils.

The Lophocereus schottii is a slow-growing cactus that usually doesn't form a true trunk, but develops numerous tall, ascending, columnar trunks. These branch primarily at or near the base into a candelabra-like shape. The trunks typically reach 2-4 meters in height, but can reach up to 7 meters.

The Lophocereus schottii blooms on the hairy upper part of the stems. The flowers are nocturnal, opening at dusk and remaining open until early morning. They are 3-5 cm long, 4-4.5 cm wide, greenish-white on the underside and pinkish-white inside. The flowering period runs from April to September, with one or more flowers emerging from each areole.
The edible fruits are round, usually 2.3–4.0 cm in diameter, and as red as ripe strawberries with red flesh. They are spineless or nearly spineless. Fruits appear from April to December, peaking in June when the upper stems are often laden with fruit.
