The Opuntia zebrina f. reticulata is also sometimes called the Cobra cactus. This is due to the unique growth lines on its leaves. These sometimes have the patterns of a cobra skin. The Opuntia zebrina f. reticulata has a dark green color and produces small dark green leaves. The leaves have small light brown to dark brown spines, especially on the top. The growth lines also determine the shape of its leaves. They usually have an oval shape, but they can also have many other arbitrary shapes. This gives each plant a different appearance.

When this cactus overwinters in completely dry soil, the Opuntia zebrina f. reticulata can tolerate temperatures down to -5 °C.
