Information

Tylecodon decipiens is a beautiful, low-growing succulent native to southern Namibia and the Northern Cape in South Africa. It grows in dry areas and rocky terrain where little rain falls.

Tylecodon decipiens is a dwarf succulent with an irregularly shaped, tuberous base that produces many branches. These branches grow close together, forming a dense mat about 20 cm in diameter. They are smooth and greyish green, with light grey, flaky bark.

The leaves are small and jellybean-shaped. They are greyish green, or rarely brown, and grow to just 1.3 cm long and 1 cm in diameter. These miniature leaves give the plant its characteristic appearance. The upper surface of the leaves is flat to grooved.

Tylecodon decipiens blooms in summer, when it sheds its leaves. The flowers are tubular and hairy on the outside. They are white or sometimes tinged with purple, and can grow to 0.4 cm long and 0.4 mm in diameter.

Tylecodon decipiens can tolerate temperatures down to -4°C, so it is somewhat frost-hardy. It is a winter grower, so water it in winter and sparingly in summer.
